While it is difficult to compare canyons world-wide, Blyde River Canyon is one of the largest canyons on Earth, and the largest 'green canyon' due to its lush subtropical foliage. It has some of the deepest precipitous cliffs than any canyon on the planet, and is known as one of the great wonders of nature on the Africa Continent. The Blyde River Canyon is a significant natural feature of South Africa, located in Mpumalanga, and forming the northern part of the Drakensberg escarpment. It is 26 km in length and is, on average, around 2,500 feet (762 m) deep.
The Blyde River Lake, when full, is at an altitude of 665m. This canyon is part of the Panorama route. This route starts at the town of Graskop and includes God's Window, the Pinnacle and Bourke's Luck Pot-holes. Eco Explorer will take you to secret routes to get the you into the bottom of the Canyon, and explore the Outback Views that are rarely available to the general tourist from the highest point on Mariepskop, unexplored water-falls and subtropical trails, where you might get a glimpse of the Knysna Lourie, Purple Crested Lourie, Cape Parrot and the very rare Taita Falcon. The history and culture of the African tribes comes to life at Nyani Cultural Village. This new cultural attraction in Hoedspruit is an ideal destination for visitors and learners of all ages, with the program modified to suit all age groups in terms of content and duration. The experience starts with a tour of our traditional Shangaan village. Here we learn about the architecture, the agriculture, family duties and the customs of the Shangaan people.
Interaction and hands on participation are encouraged as guests discover how the huts are built, the maize is ground, the boys pass initiation, the girls learn to bead and much more. The second phase to the project was completed in September 2013 with the building of a “Living Cultural Village” where the performers take you on a journey through the stages of life in a Shangaan homestead (Muti).
We learn about traditional practices from birth, through childhood up to marriage, after which a delicious lunch will be prepared and served in the typical African style, after the theatre show. Following the village tour (approximately 45 minutes), the group is led up to our boma theatre to experience our original show “Limpopo Pathways” featuring the costumes, songs and dances of the San (Bushmen), the Shona & Venda, the Tsonga, the Balobedu (Modjadji the Rain Queen), the Pedi and the BaHananawa (Tswana).
We also include the Swati and Zulu dances as these tribes played an influential part in the history of the Limpopo. The hour long theatre show is designed as an entertainment and educational tool telling the story of the origins, journeys and lifestyles of the tribes that settled in the Limpopo. Presented in a natural setting, under the thatch roof open air Boma theatre, the show is an exciting venture following the pathways of the tribes from the past to the present.
